Nestled on the southeastern coast of Georgia, Savannah is a city where the past and present seamlessly intertwine, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Southern history and culture. With its cobblestone streets, majestic oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and picturesque squares, Savannah is a treasure trove of charming sights and delightful experiences.

One of the most captivating aspects of Savannah is its historic squares. Laid out in the 1733 plan by General James Oglethorpe, the city’s founder, these shaded squares were designed as communal centers for the original colonies. Today, they continue to serve as peaceful retreats for both locals and tourists, each telling its own story of the past. As we wandered through these shaded oases, it was easy to feel transported back in time, surrounded by the beautiful historic architecture and the soft whispers of history echoing through the leaves.

No visit to Savannah would be complete without indulging in some of the local culinary delights, particularly the pralines. These sweet, creamy confections made from nuts, sugar, cream, and butter are a Southern specialty, and Savannah boasts some of the best. Stopping by a local candy shop to watch pralines being made right before your eyes is a treat in itself. The aroma of caramelized sugar and roasted pecans that fills the air is utterly intoxicating.

During our stay, we had the pleasure of lodging at the Perry Lane Hotel, a beacon of Southern hospitality and elegance. The hotel’s service was impeccable, making us feel right at home from the moment we stepped through the doors. The decor was a perfect blend of modern luxury and traditional charm, reflecting the spirit of Savannah itself. And, of course, the grits served at breakfast were a creamy, comforting reminder of why Southern cuisine is so beloved.

From the sun-dappled charm of its historic squares to the sweet allure of its pralines and the welcoming luxury of the Perry Lane Hotel, Savannah offered us an unforgettable experience. The city’s ability to preserve its heritage while celebrating its vibrant cultural scene is truly remarkable. As we left Savannah, we carried with us the warmth of its hospitality and the serene beauty of its shaded squares, already longing to return to this enchanting Southern belle.
