A Weekend in Newport, Rhode Island: Sailing, Mansions, and More

Newport, Rhode Island, is a city synonymous with seaside luxury and historical grandeur, making it a unique destination for those drawn to the opulence of the Gilded Age or the thrill of sailing. Our trip to this coastal gem revealed the charm and challenges of a small, historically rich town.

Our exploration of Newport was dominated by visits to the magnificent mansions lining Bellevue Avenue, remnants of America’s Gilded Age when the town was a summer playground for the country’s wealthiest families. Among these, The Breakers stands out as the most grandiose. Built by the Vanderbilt family in the late 19th century, this 70-room Italian Renaissance-style villa is as imposing as it is beautiful, with vast ocean views and intricately designed interiors that offer a peek into the opulent lifestyle of its original inhabitants. The well-preserved state of such mansions provides a fascinating insight into the lavishness of a bygone era.

However, our experience in Newport was not without its downsides. Accommodation in the area can be prohibitively expensive, with limited options ranging from quaint, pricey B&Bs to larger hotels that fail to deliver value for the high rates they charge. Shopping in Newport also reflected this disparity in offerings, with options ranging from high-end art galleries featuring artworks priced in the tens of thousands to basic tourist-oriented shops selling $10 t-shirts. This lack of middle ground made the shopping experience quite polarizing.

Traffic in Newport, especially during the summer months, can be frustrating. The town’s layout, with limited routes for entering and exiting, often leads to congested roads, complicating what one hopes would be a leisurely visit. Despite these logistical challenges, Newport’s appeal for those interested in sailing or American history is undeniable. The town’s marinas and sailing culture are vibrant and inviting, with the annual sailing regattas being a particular highlight for maritime enthusiasts.

Overall, while Newport offers a rich tapestry of history and a premier sailing experience, it might not compel a repeat visit unless you’re particularly passionate about boats or historical architecture. For us, experiencing the town’s history and seaside charm was enriching, but once was enough to capture the essence of this picturesque but pricey destination.
