A Private Escape with Memorable Highlights

We recently stayed at Banyan Tree Mayakoba, a luxury resort located within the exclusive Mayakoba complex on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Nestled between lush mangroves, tranquil lagoons, and a pristine beach, the property is part of a larger eco-friendly enclave known for its beauty and world-class amenities, including an award-winning golf course. While our overall experience was positive, a few shortcomings tempered the stay.

Privacy and Design: A True Retreat

One of the most striking features of the Banyan Tree is the sense of privacy it offers. From the moment we stepped into our villa, we felt cocooned in luxury. Each villa features its own private pool and spacious interiors, creating an environment where you could spend your entire stay without needing to venture out. For those seeking tranquility without sacrificing amenities, the Banyan Tree excels.

Even the resort’s common spaces, including dining and lounge areas, were thoughtfully designed to feel intimate. We rarely encountered other guests, and even when the resort was near capacity, we didn’t feel crowded. While there were occasional moments of noise from larger groups, they were isolated and didn’t detract from the overall atmosphere.

Exceptional Service: Personal and Warm

Service at the Banyan Tree is a standout feature. We were assigned a personal concierge reachable via WhatsApp, who ensured every request was promptly addressed. This was a delightful surprise and something the resort should highlight more in its marketing. Beyond this, the staff consistently went out of their way to be helpful and welcoming. By the end of our stay, we were on a first-name basis with several team members, which made the experience feel personalized despite the resort’s size.

Exploring the Grounds: A Natural Paradise

The resort’s grounds are breathtaking. Set within a network of lagoons and mangroves, the Banyan Tree feels like it’s in perfect harmony with its environment. We highly recommend the complimentary boat tour, which offers a unique perspective on the property’s natural beauty and gives you a chance to spot local wildlife.

The expansive layout does mean there’s some distance between the main resort and the beach, but the constant availability of golf carts made getting around easy and enjoyable. On one ride, the driver even stopped to take photos of the stunning scenery alongside us.

Dining: Memorable Meals with Come at a Cost

Our dining experiences were mostly positive. Breakfast at the main resort was a highlight, with a wide variety of fresh and flavorful options. Dinner at Cello, the resort’s Italian restaurant, was particularly enjoyable, with thoughtful touches like high-quality olive oil and vinegar that elevated the meal.

However, pricing was an issue, especially for simpler meals like lunch, where the cost felt disproportionate to the quality. We found ourselves wishing for more casual and reasonably priced options, such as a taco stand or beachside grill.

A Trip to Tulum: Culture and Adventure

One of the highlights of our stay was an excursion to Tulum, arranged through the resort’s tour office. Tulum’s coastal ruins, perched atop cliffs overlooking the turquoise Caribbean, are a must-see. This site, dating back to the late Classic Period of Mayan civilization, served as an important trading port and remains one of the best-preserved coastal Mayan sites.

After exploring the ruins, we snorkeled in the nearby waters, where vibrant coral reefs and marine life made for an unforgettable experience. While the sights were spectacular, the tour itself was less impressive. Logistics were poorly managed, with delays, crowded transport, and a lack of personal attention, which felt out of place compared to the resort’s usual high standards.

Room Condition: A Mixed Bag

While the setting of the resort is undeniably beautiful, the condition of our villa was disappointing. From water-damaged ceilings to non-functional fixtures, the room showed signs of wear that were hard to overlook. Maintenance staff addressed some of the issues, but it was clear the villa needed a thorough renovation.

Final Reflections

The Banyan Tree Mayakoba offers a luxurious escape with exceptional service, stunning natural surroundings, and a unique blend of privacy and indulgence. While the condition of our villa and some food pricing detracted from the experience, the resort’s overall charm and attention to guest needs made it a memorable stay.

Paired with a day exploring the rich history and beauty of Tulum, our trip offered a mix of relaxation and cultural adventure. With some updates and tweaks, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba could easily rank among the top resorts in the Riviera Maya. For now, it remains a wonderful option for those seeking tranquility and personal service in a stunning setting.
