Cruise Review: Celebrity Summit, January 2023

In January 2023, I embarked on a journey aboard the Celebrity Summit, part of the Celebrity Cruises fleet, a line known for its modern luxury cruising. Launched in 2001, the Celebrity Summit has seen various refurbishments, the most recent being part of the line’s $500 million fleet-wide modernization program. This journey began from Miami, making stops at Costa Maya and Cozumel, offering a blend of scenic beauty and cultural experiences.
Booking and Embarkation
The cruise was a last-minute decision, and luckily, the ship was only half full due to the off-peak season. This unexpected low capacity contributed to a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere, allowing for better interaction with the crew and facilities.
Accommodations and Work Environment
Opting for an ocean-view room without a balcony, I found the room design sleek and modern, perfectly suitable for a cruise meant to focus on work. The absence of a balcony was hardly noticeable, given the room’s comfort and the purpose of my trip. The Wi-Fi exceeded my expectations, with reliable connectivity that facilitated uninterrupted work, a definite plus for any working traveler.
Staff and Service
The staff aboard the Celebrity Summit were a highlight, consistently friendly and in good spirits, which made the overall atmosphere welcoming. Their demeanor helped make the solitary aspects of a working cruise feel more connected and enjoyable.

Excursions and Destinations
A memorable part of the trip was the excursion to the fresh water lagoons, which was genuinely special and provided a serene escape from the typical tourist activity. However, the stops at Costa Maya and Cozumel were underwhelming. Costa Maya felt like a manufactured destination, lacking authenticity and depth. Similarly, Cozumel offered limited options beyond resort passes, which did little to enhance the experience of the locale.
Entertainment and Atmosphere
The onboard entertainment was disappointing, with performances that didn’t match the usual Celebrity Cruises standards. The headline comedian failed to deliver, prompting me to leave the show early, and the musical acts did not engage my interest. Additionally, the ship’s vibe catered more to an older demographic, which contributed to a subdued atmosphere that lacked excitement.
Ship Condition and Dining
The condition of the Summit showed signs of wear; notably, rust was visible in the pool areas, indicating a need for better maintenance. Dining onboard was adequate, but it was apparent that budget cuts had affected the quality and portion sizes of meals, making the culinary experience less impressive than expected.

Overall Experience
Given the circumstances of a last-minute booking at very low cost, the trip aboard the Celebrity Summit was satisfactory. It provided a peaceful environment to work and relax, despite the shortcomings in entertainment, destination appeal, and ship maintenance. However, for someone on their first cruise, these elements might have been a letdown.
This experience, while adequate for the price and purpose, highlighted the importance of setting the right expectations when choosing a cruise, especially outside the peak travel season.
