A Broken Camera amid a Whirlwind of Culture & History

During a remarkable three-week journey across Europe with a group tour for young adults, I had the privilege of spending several days in Paris, a city that not only lives up to its reputation as the City of Light but surpasses every expectation with its blend of history, culture, and beauty. From iconic landmarks to breathtaking art, Paris offered an endless array of attractions that made each day an adventure.

Our Parisian exploration took us first to the majestic Arc de Triomphe, standing at the top of the Champs-Élysées. The panoramic view from the top is a powerful introduction to the city’s grandeur, sprawling out in all directions. From there, we made our way to the unmistakable Eiffel Tower. Witnessing the Eiffel Tower’s sparkling light show as night fell over Paris was truly magical, illuminating the evening with thousands of twinkling lights—a sight that embodies the romance of Paris.

Another day was devoted to art and history, starting with a visit to the Louvre Museum. Home to thousands of works from around the globe, including the enigmatic Mona Lisa, the Louvre was as overwhelming as it was inspiring. However, a small mishap occurred when my camera broke amidst the vast collections, a moment of panic that ended with a quick purchase of a new, albeit basic, camera from the Louvre gift shop. While this new camera allowed me to capture memories of the trip, the quality of the photos didn’t quite do justice to the breathtaking surroundings.

We also visited the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, whose gothic architecture and centuries of history stood solemn and imposing against the bustling city. Though it was before the unfortunate fire in 2019, the memory of its historical facade remains vivid in my mind.

The journey through Paris wouldn’t have been complete without a day trip to the opulent Palace of Versailles, where the grandeur of French royalty was on full display. The palace’s immense halls and beautiful gardens offered a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the French monarchy and left us marveling at the extravagance.

Reflecting on my time in Paris, it was a highlight reel of famous sights and bustling city life. Yet, I left feeling there was so much more to see and experience. Paris is a city that deserves time—to be explored, to be photographed with a keen eye, and to be savored without the rush of a scheduled tour. I dream of returning, armed with a modern camera and ample time, to truly capture the essence of Parisian life, from its sunrise over Montmartre to the last glimmers of light by the Seine.

This whirlwind tour through Paris was a chapter in a broader European adventure that was as educational as it was breathtaking, and it has left me with a longing to return and delve deeper into the city’s timeless charm.
