Accommodations and Local Attractions
We stayed at the Homewood Suites near Vanderbilt University, a decent hotel conveniently located within walking distance of the university campus and several BBQ restaurants—perfect for indulging in some local flavors. The hotel’s proximity to Vanderbilt offered a glimpse into the bustling campus life and the youthful energy that fills the area.

One of the more unusual attractions near our hotel was Nashville’s full-scale replica of the Parthenon, originally built for Tennessee’s 1897 Centennial Exposition. This structure now serves as a museum and is a peculiar yet fascinating nod to Nashville’s nickname, the “Athens of the South.” The tour guide referred to Vanderbilt as the “Harvard of the South” or, more accurately, Harvard being the “Vanderbilt of the North” — whatever they have to tell themselves.

Musical Explorations
A highlight of the trip was our visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. As someone who isn’t particularly a fan of country music, I found the museum to be nicely curated with an extensive collection of memorabilia. While it was certainly interesting to see artifacts from various legendary performers, I found the museum to be more focused on memorabilia than on the music itself. Nonetheless, it’s a world-class facility that offers a deep dive into the genre’s impact on American music culture.

We also took a guided tour of the area, which gave us insight into Nashville’s musical landmarks and vibrant artistic community. For any country music enthusiast, these tours are invaluable, providing context and background that enrich the Nashville experience.

Travel Tips and Airport Experience
Our trip concluded with a late-night flight out of Nashville, which was less than ideal due to the limited amenities at the airport. The Nashville airport had few options for dining and seating, making our wait uncomfortable. For travelers used to airport lounges, Nashville’s offerings might be disappointing, especially without access to exclusive areas like the SkyClub. If you’re flying out at night, particularly with an airline like JetBlue that doesn’t have lounge partnerships, be prepared for a sparse and possibly tedious wait.

Final Thoughts
Nashville proved to be an intriguing city with a strong cultural identity shaped by music and history. Whether you’re a fan of country music or just curious about America’s musical heritage, Nashville offers a broad spectrum of experiences that can cater to various interests. Despite the airport’s shortcomings, the city’s rich narrative and Southern charm make it a noteworthy destination for both brief visits and extended stays.
