This Victorian castle, built in 1869 by the Smiley Family, has been welcoming guests for over a century to its enchanting surroundings. The property is not just a hotel but also part of the larger Mohonk Preserve, which is dedicated to protecting the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains and surrounding woodland.

During my visit, I opted for a day pass which included a buffet lunch. The dining experience was a highlight, featuring a delicious prime rib among other delectable options, satisfying a variety of tastes. Another modern convenience that impressed me was the availability of functioning electric car chargers, a thoughtful addition for environmentally conscious travelers.

The grounds of Mohonk are as breathtaking as the historical narratives suggest, with meticulously kept gardens and the striking architecture of the hotel itself transporting you back in time. Walking through the area feels like stepping into a different era, a testament to the hotel’s commitment to preserving its historical essence.

The service and dining, although good, do not align with five-star standards, making the expense harder to justify.

Despite these drawbacks, Mohonk Mountain House remains a worthwhile destination. For those who might find the cost prohibitive, it’s worth noting that the surrounding trails offer a backdoor into the preserve’s natural beauty without the need for a day pass.
