Exploring the City by the Bay
Our recent trip to San Francisco was a delightful blend of wedding celebrations and revisiting some of the city’s iconic sights. Though we had previously explored many of San Francisco’s famous attractions, this visit offered new experiences and a chance to appreciate the city’s rich history and vibrant culture.
A Beautiful Wedding in Golden Gate Park
The primary reason for our visit was a wedding in the picturesque Golden Gate Park. This sprawling urban park, filled with lush gardens, serene lakes, and cultural landmarks, provided a stunning backdrop for the ceremony. The park’s natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere made it a perfect setting for a joyous celebration.
Revisiting San Francisco Highlights
While we had previously visited Fisherman’s Wharf, the Ferry Terminal, and Alamo Square to see the Painted Ladies, this trip included some fresh experiences:

Ferry Tour of the Bay

We took a ferry tour of San Francisco Bay, sailing under the iconic, ever-foggy Golden Gate Bridge. The view from the water offered a unique perspective of the bridge and the city skyline, shrouded in the mysterious coastal mist.
The Presidio

Our visit to the Presidio was particularly enlightening. This historic military post, now a national park, offers stunning views, hiking trails, and historical exhibits. We spoke with a park ranger who shared the Presidio’s rich history. Established by the Spanish in 1776, it later became a U.S. Army post and played a crucial role in various military campaigns. Today, it serves as a vibrant public space, blending natural beauty with historical significance.
California Academy of Sciences and the DeYoung Museum
Nestled in the heart of Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Sciences is a modern marvel with its green roof and sustainable design. The museum’s exhibits on natural history, planetarium shows, and the living rainforest were captivating. Just across the way, the DeYoung Museum impressed us with its diverse art collections and striking architecture.
Legion of Honor Museum

Often overlooked in favor of more famous attractions, the Legion of Honor Museum is an excellent art museum that deserves more recognition. Its impressive collection of European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, combined with its stunning location overlooking the Golden Gate, makes it a must-visit for art enthusiasts.
Capturing the Golden Gate Bridge

On our way out of town, we stopped on the Marin County side to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge. The park ranger humorously suggested that the best way to get a photo of the bridge was to buy a postcard, due to the persistent fog. However, we were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the bridge peeking out from the mist, making for a memorable photo opportunity.
Beyond San Francisco: Muir Woods and Napa Valley
After our time in the city, we continued our journey to Muir Woods and Napa Valley. Muir Woods offered a peaceful retreat among towering redwoods, providing a stark contrast to the urban environment of San Francisco. Napa Valley, with its rolling vineyards and world-class wineries, was the perfect place to relax and indulge in some of California’s finest wines.
