A Roadtrip to the Stars

Driving up to Glacier Point from Yosemite Valley was an adventure that promised breathtaking views and a chance to stargaze in one of the most beautiful spots in Yosemite National Park. Though Glacier Point is only half a mile from Yosemite Valley as the crow flies, the drive takes about an hour due to the winding mountain roads.

The Journey Begins: Bridalveil Falls

Our journey started with a stop at Bridalveil Falls, where we were treated to a mesmerizing sight. As the sunlight hit the cascading water, a vibrant rainbow appeared, reflecting off the falls. It was a magical moment that set the tone for the rest of our evening.

Arriving at Glacier Point

We arrived at Glacier Point just in time for sunset. The sun’s rays painted El Capitan in a spectrum of colors, creating a picturesque scene that was absolutely stunning. Glacier Point offers one of the most iconic views in Yosemite, providing a panoramic vista of the valley, Half Dome, and the High Sierra peaks.

The Star Talk Experience

As night fell, we gathered in the amphitheater for a star talk, booked through TravelYosemite, the official vendor for the park. Unfortunately, this part of our evening did not live up to expectations. The woman leading the talk was neither a scientist nor a ranger, and her lack of expertise quickly became apparent. Although she pointed out specific constellations, her knowledge seemed superficial, as if she had skimmed a Wikipedia article on the subject.

Her talk was meandering and filled with mistakes, making it difficult for adults to follow and likely impossible for children. Additionally, she did not have the authority to close the amphitheater to other guests, so people could attend the talk whether they had paid or not. We would not recommend booking this experience.

The Magic of the Night Sky

However, the real magic began after everyone left and the flashlights were turned off. With the amphitheater to ourselves, I pointed my camera to the night sky for a long exposure. As the lens captured the scene, the Milky Way and thousands of stars were revealed in all their glory. The night sky, free from light pollution, was truly breathtaking and a highlight of our trip.

Final Thoughts

Driving up to Glacier Point from Yosemite Valley may take some time, but it is well worth the effort. The views along the way, especially at Bridal Veil Falls and Glacier Point itself, are spectacular. Despite the disappointing star talk, the opportunity to stargaze in such a pristine environment was unforgettable.

For those planning a similar adventure, we recommend skipping the paid star talk and simply enjoying the night sky on your own. Bring a good camera for long exposures, and be prepared for a night of awe-inspiring celestial views. Glacier Point is a must-visit for anyone seeking the beauty and tranquility of Yosemite’s night sky.
